An investigation of stealing in the teacher’s lounge of a German middle school leads to trouble for a young, idealistic teacher. Nominated for the 2024 Oscars, the film won at the 38th Goya Awards for Best European Film.

The Allegheny Department of World Languages & Cultures will be screening “20,000 Species of Bees” (Spain, 2023, Director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren) at the Movies@Meadville.

In this film, Lucia, an 8-year old transgender girl, is on a quest for identity. During a summer in a Spanish village house linked to beekeeping, she explores her femininity alongside the women of her family, who at the same time reflect on their own. The movie has won 38 awards, including the Spanish Goya Awards for The Goya Awards for best supporting actress, new director and individual screenplay.

The Allegheny Department of World Languages & Cultures will be screening “The Taste of Things” (France, 2023, Director Trần Anh Hùng) at the Movies@Meadville.

Set against the backdrop of 19th century French cuisine, this enchanting movie celebrates the art of cooking and the bond it forges. Starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel, the film was nominated for a Palme d’Or at Cannes, with Trần Anh Hùng taking home the Best Director prize. The actors’ kitchen chemistry takes us on a wonderful journey of love, passion and gastronomy.

Years after leaving her Palestinian village to pursue and acting career in France, Hiam Abbass returns home with her daughter, filmmaker Lina Soualem, in this intimate documentary about four generations of daring Palestinian women who keep their story and legacy alive through the strength of their bonds, despite exile, dispossession, and heartbreak.
